Elementals vs. Demons
SETTING
This world is inhabited by Anthropomorphic creatures who walk on two legs and have the general anatomy of a human, but retain all animal features, in addition to regular animals. All species can learn magic. Magic is divided into two categories: Elemental and Black.
The world is much like our own, with similar climates, but no countries exist, only towns, villages, and the occasional large city (usually centered around a school). Demons (who practice Black Magic) and Elementals live amongst each other in relative harmony, and some larger cities have a school for each type of magic within them.
Technology-wise, this world is on the same level as we are. So yes, there are computers, TVs, cars, and other electronics, running water in homes, etc.
Our story takes place in a large city called Valencia (val-EN-see-ah), and it is home to a school of each type. The Elemental school, called Yunaria (yoo-NAR-ee-ah) Academy, lies on the West end of town. The Black Magic school, named Malefinix (mal-EFF-in-icks) Hall, is on the East end. Both are elegant buildings with plenty of classrooms, kitchens, and dorms. These schools contain all grades, from Kindergarten to Senior year of high school.
Each year, Yunaria and Malefinix put on a competition for their best and brightest students called The Games. These games consist of obstacle courses, carefully-watched over battles between teams of 3 members, and the crowning glory: the Gladiator match, in which the Most Valuable Student from each school is pitted against the other in a fight to the... well, not death, but until the one cannot fight anymore (in the past, deaths have occurred though. Rarely, but it has still happened).
Age does not matter when choosing the competitors for The Games, so if a younger student shows more ability than an older, the younger may be chosen instead. Of course, anyone who does not want to participate does not have to, but most students seem to want to enter.
You have been chosen for your school's team. There are two months till the games, and your training is intense. Will you come out on top?
YUNARIA ACADEMY OF MAGIC
Elemental magic students can choose to focus on becoming the master of one element, or learn a little bit from each (called Jacks-of-all-trades). The elements are what is known in our world as the 5 Chinese Elements, and they follow this cycle:
Wood parts Earth (such as roots; or, Trees can prevent soil erosion);
Earth absorbs (or muddies) Water (or an Earth dam can control water);
Water quenches Fire;
Fire melts Metal;
Metal chops Wood.

THE ELEMENTS
(Note: Powers are not limited to what is listed here. These are just ideas! Please remember that if you are a Jack-of-all-trades, your powers are diminished. Jacks-of-all-trades do not have to learn all the Elements, they can pick and choose. But the more Elements you choose to learn, the weaker your powers are.)
Wood: Includes any magic involving plants and fungi. Those who specialize in this element can grow their own food, clothing, and weapons from nothing, build plant- and wood-based structures instantly, and command any plant near them. Jacks-of-all-trades can make already planted seed grow faster, talk to plants, and, in combat, fashion any piece of wood near them into a deadly weapon.
Earth: Includes any magic that involves the ground (but not Wood nor Metal magic). Those who specialize in this element can build structures instantly, cause landslides and rock slides (and stop them), and tend to have lots of physical strength and defense. Jacks-of-all-trades can cause small land and rock slides (but cannot stop large ones), can pick up vibrations in the earth, and create walls.
Water: Includes any magic that involves water and water-dwelling beings. Those who specialize in this element can create bodies of water out of thin air (not oceans, but anything up to a lake in size), summon tidal waves even in the middle of a desert, and have healing powers (healing major wounds takes time, but no medicine is needed). Jacks-of-all-trades can create small amounts of water in their hands, talk to aquatic creatures, and breathe underwater.
Fire: Includes any magic that involves fire. Those who specialize in this element can make volcanoes erupt if they are near, conjure large fire balls, and are completely flame-retardant. Jacks-of-all-trades can use small fire balls, withstand extremely high temperatures (but are not completely fire-proof), and spit fire (not like a flame-thrower that spews a large, constant stream of fire. This is literally spiting a wad of fire out).
Metal: Includes any magic that involves metal and minerals. Those who specialize in this element can create armor out of nothing, sense the exact spot where minerals and metals are buried in the ground, and can fortify walls. Jacks-of-all-trades are skilled armor-makers (but need a forge to do so), can sense the approximate location of minerals and metals, and fix machines rather handily.
PROS AND CONS
Specializing in 1 Element: You have complete control over your element and great power, but lack versatility.
Jack-of-all-trades: Extremely versatile, but lack power.
BLACK MAGIC
Those who wish to become Demons learn the Dark Artes, which consist of tricking others and harming them indirectly (poisoning, illusion magic, and others), in addition to more “evil” practices like Necromancy. Black Magic students can only learn one type of Black Magic, and Black Magic cannot be used on other Black Magic users.
CATEGORIES
(Note: Powers are not limited to what is listed here. These are just ideas! But limits set in place are not to be exceeded. For example, Necromancers will never be able to will or command someone to die.)
Curses: Power over words involving other individuals or groups. Cursers can make others fail at what they're doing, or help them achieve their goal.
Necromancy: The power to bring the dead to life, but only as mindless zombies. They can also divine information from the entrails of the deceased. They cannot make someone die just by commanding it.
Illusions: The power to make others see and hear what isn't really there.
Poison: Skilled potion makers who can concoct any sort of magical drink from droughts of death to strengthening brews.
OUT-OF-CHARACTER INFORMATION AND RULES
1 character per person. (Might be changing this rule!)
Keep it PG-13 please! If you feel the need to go higher than that, please take it to a private arena (e-mails or instant messaging, for example).
All characters must be an OviPet that you own.
Your character can be anthropomorphic (anthro for short) or remain in its original form, it's up to you. All species are welcome!
Your character does not have to have colors that match up to its element or alignment, nor do all pets with dragon-like wings or horns have to be Demons. Pick whatever pet of yours you want to role play, and be creative!
No God-moding or power-playing. This means that your character is not all-powerful and perfect, and you cannot control other peoples' characters.
Do not post once or a few times then leave (unless you have a valid reason for not coming on, like illness, no internet, etc). If you make a character, you are saying that you can dedicate a bit of time each week to this role play.
Any Out-of-Character (OOC) talk must be labeled as such, and I'd prefer if it is surrounded by either (( )) or [[ ]].
No posts that are only OOC chatter. OOC comments must be accompanied by more role play sentences than OOC sentences. Example: if you type 3 OOC sentences, you must type at least 4 in-character sentences.
Speaking of sentences, I'd prefer if each post is at least 4 sentences, but I know sometimes fewer is called for. If you're having a hard time thinking of what to type, try imaging what your character is doing with their body, or what they're looking at.
I reserve the right to add or change rules.
